In the second quarter of 2024 the gross domestic product was $3.43T MX, 6.92% more than the previous quarter.

According DENUE 2024, Retail Trade in Supermarkets and Department Stores registered 72,789 economic units. The states with the highest number of economic units were Estado de México (5,482), Nuevo León (5,099), and Veracruz de Ignacio de la Llave (4,388).

According to data from the Economic Census 2019, total gross production was $542B MX. The states with the highest total gross production were Estado de México ($60.5B MX) and Ciudad de México ($46.5B MX).

For its part, total income reached $1.7T MX in 2019, being the states with the highest income Estado de México ($188B MX) and Ciudad de México ($150B MX).

Economic activities are related if they require similar knowledge or inputs. In 2014 in Retail Trade in Supermarkets and Department Stores the states with the highest affinity were Sonora (0.84), Chihuahua (0.79), Nuevo León (0.73), Coahuila de Zaragoza (0.73), and Sinaloa (0.73).

In the second quarter of 2024, Retail Trade recorded a gross domestic product of $3.43T MX, evidencing an increase of 6.92% compared to the previous quarter and an increase of 7.32% compared to the same period of the previous year.

Production Indicators by State

According to data from the Economic Census 2019,  62,316 economic units were totaled in Retail Trade in Supermarkets and Department Stores, highlighting Nuevo León (4,432), Estado de México (4,245), and Tamaulipas (3,867).

Total gross production was $542B MX. The states with the highest total gross production were Estado de México ($60.5B MX) and Ciudad de México ($46.5B MX).

Total income reached $1.7T MX in 2019, being the states with the highest income Estado de México ($188B MX) and Ciudad de México ($150B MX).

According to dato from Economic Census 2014, Retail Trade in Supermarkets and Department Stores had a total of 116,952 economic units and the municipalities with the highest number of economic units were Reynosa (3.65k), Monterrey (2.85k), and Tijuana (2.61k)

Total income eached $2.83T MX and the municipalities with the highest income were Monterrey ($86.2B MX), Tijuana ($70.9B MX), and Juárez ($68.1B MX).

Total expenditures were $2.42T MX and the municipalities with the highest expenditures were Monterrey ($72.7B MX), Tijuana ($63.6B MX), and Juárez ($60.1B MX).

On the other hand, in 2014 there were 741219 employees dependent on economic units and the municipalities with the highest number of employees were Juárez (29.9k), Monterrey (23.3k), and Hermosillo (17.1k).

According to DENUE data published in May 2024, 61,317 companies with 0 to 10 employees were registered (7,372 companies more than the previous period). In the same period, 6,612 companies with 11 to 50 employees were registered (490 companies more than the previous period).

2,248 companies with 51 to 100 employees were registered in 2024 (498 companies more than the previous period). Likewise, 2,612 companies with more than 101 employees were registered (71 companies more than the previous period).

As of May 2021, the states with the highest degree of specialization in Retail Trade in Supermarkets and Department Stores were Baja California Sur (3.25), Quintana Roo (2.78), and Tamaulipas (2.56). The degree of specialization is measured using the RCA index, which represents the ratio between the observed and expected establishments of each state for each industry.

The states with the highest degree of development opportunity in Retail Trade in Supermarkets and Department Stores according to Relatedness were San Luis Potosí (0.6), Aguascalientes (0.58), and Ciudad de México (0.5). According to data from the Economic Census 2019, the distribution of economic units according to size that had access to financing was 14.2% units with up to 10 people, 64.5% units with 11 to 50 people, 71.7% units with 51 to 250 people, and 54.4% units with 251 and more people.

According to the age of the economic units, the distribution of those that obtained financing was 18.5% of the recently created (up to 2 years) units, 16.9% of the youth (3 to 5 years) units, 21.6% of the adults (6 to 10 years) units, and 27.4% of the seniors (over 10 years) units.

The states with the highest percentage of economic units that received financing were Nuevo León (32.3%), Veracruz de Ignacio de la Llave (29.6%), Michoacán de Ocampo (29.5%), Ciudad de México (28%), and Tlaxcala (27.1%).

According to data from the 2019 Economic Census, internet sales reached $29.5B MX and purchases were $98.5B MX. On the other hand, sales made in monetary transactions were $1.69T MX and purchases reached $1.31T MX.

Problems faced by economic units

The chart shows the main problems faced by economic units. With the upper selector it is possible to analyze the problems affecting companies according to their size. By default, the problems of economic units with up to 10 people are shown.

According to data from the Economic Census 2019, the main problems faced by the economic units of Retail Trade in Supermarkets and Department Stores with up to 10 workers are public insecurity (42.6%), another problems (15.8%), high expenses in service payments (14.2%), and high costs of raw materials (10.3%).

According to data from the Economic Census 2019, the states with the highest percentage of large economic units with innovation activities in 2016, 2017 or 2018 were Nuevo León (25.9%), Tamaulipas (20.4%), Ciudad de México (15.2%), Baja California (14.7%), and Jalisco (12.6%).

According to data from the Economic Census 2019, 9.41% of the large economic units of the private and parastatal sector of Retail Trade in Supermarkets and Department Stores had innovation activities in 2018.

Of the total staff employed in large economic units, 3.29% was employed in product innovation activities, 2.13% in process innovation, 7.66% in market innovation, 4.29% in organizational innovation, and 0.95% in innovation for technological adaptation and documentation.

According to data from the Economic Census 2019, the lowercase Retail Trade in Supermarkets and Department Stores Subsector had 3,394 economic units that had qualified staff in technological research and development activities, 9 economic units had it for research and technological development in the field of Biotechnology and 4 economic units for research and technological development in Nanotechnology.

In the same year, 34 economic units had qualified personnel in the registration or processing of patents for brands, products or processes, and 202 economic units had this type of staff to contracts or acquisition of patents for brands, products or processes.
