In the second quarter of 2024 the gross domestic product was $3.43T MX, 6.92% more than the previous quarter.

According DENUE 2024, Retail Trade registered 2,261,945 economic units. The states with the highest number of economic units were Estado de México (335,640), Ciudad de México (204,625), and Jalisco (155,118).

According to data from the Economic Census 2019, total gross production was $1.77T MX. The states with the highest total gross production were Ciudad de México ($220B MX) and Estado de México ($192B MX).

For its part, total income reached $5.63T MX in 2019, being the states with the highest income Ciudad de México ($654B MX) and Estado de México ($599B MX).

Economic activities are related if they require similar knowledge or inputs. In 2014 in Retail Trade the states with the highest affinity were San Luis Potosí (0.83), Baja California Sur (0.79), Sinaloa (0.75), Chihuahua (0.73), and Durango (0.69).

During the second quarter of 2024 in Retail Trade the workforce was 16.7M people, 43.8% men and 56.2% women. In addition, the average monthly salary informed was $4.74k MX.

During the same period, occupations with the highest number of workers in Retail Trade were Sales Employees, Dispatchers and Dependent on Trade, Traders in Stores, and Peddlers of Various Items (Excluding Food Sales).

In the second quarter of 2024, the workforce in Retail Trade it was of 16.7M people, 43.8% men with a reported average monthly salary of $5.76k MX and 56.2% women with a salary of $3.95k MX.

Of the total employed population, 33.1% of the total workforce were formal workers with an average monthly salary of $6.57k MX, while he 66.9% corresponds to informal workers with an average salary of $3.84k MX.

According to data from the Economic Census 2019,  2,092,770 economic units were totaled in Retail Trade, highlighting Estado de México (314,981), Ciudad de México (196,185), and Jalisco (145,586).

Total gross production was $1.77T MX. The states with the highest total gross production were Ciudad de México ($220B MX) and Estado de México ($192B MX).

Total income reached $5.63T MX in 2019, being the states with the highest income Ciudad de México ($654B MX) and Estado de México ($599B MX).

In 2019, Retail Trade had a total of 2,092,770 economic units and the municipalities with the highest number of economic units were Iztapalapa (38.4k), Ecatepec de Morelos (36.3k), and Guadalajara (36.2k).

Also, $5.62T MX in total income were registered and the municipalities with the highest income were Monterrey ($141B MX), Guadalajara ($128B MX), and Puebla ($116B MX).

Total expenditure registered in 2019 was $4.39T MX and the municipalities with the highest expenditure were Monterrey ($105B MX), Guadalajara ($101B MX), and Puebla ($92B MX).

In 2019 there were 4.85M employees dependent on economic units and the municipalities with the highest number of employees were Guadalajara (108k), Cuauhtémoc (86.4k), and Puebla (86.2k).

According to DENUE data published in May 2024, 2,205,940 companies with 0 to 10 employees were registered (20,902 companies more than the previous period). In the same period, 46,980 companies with 11 to 50 employees were registered (823 companies more than the previous period).

4,775 companies with 51 to 100 employees were registered in 2024 (460 companies more than the previous period). Likewise, 4,250 companies with more than 101 employees were registered (58 companies more than the previous period).

According to data from the Economic Census 2019, the economic units of the Retail Trade sector had 5,899,054 people employed, by age range 493,064 people up to 20 years old were registered, 1,618,702 people from 21 to 30 years old, 1,564,173 people from 31 to 40 years old and 2,223,101 people over 40 years old.

By educational level 159,814 people without education were registered, 2,634,062 people with basic education, 2,212,425 people with upper secondary education and 892,739 people with higher education.

According to data from the Economic Census 2019, the staff distribution who received training according to age range was 24.8% of staff with up to 20 years, 14% of staff between 21 and 30 years, 13.2% of staff between 31 and 40 years, and 6.11% of staff with 41 years or more.

According to the level of instruction, the distribution of trained staff was 5.59% of staff without intruction, 10.6% of staff with basic education, 12.7% of staff with upper secondary education, and 13.4% of staff with higher education.

According to data from the Economic Census 2019, the distribution of economic units according to size that had access to financing was 13.5% units with up to 10 people, 38.8% units with 11 to 50 people, 61.4% units with 51 to 250 people, and 51% units with 251 and more people.

According to the age of the economic units, the distribution of those that obtained financing was 15.8% of the recently created (up to 2 years) units, 14.5% of the youth (3 to 5 years) units, 13.9% of the adults (6 to 10 years) units, and 13.4% of the seniors (over 10 years) units.

The states with the highest percentage of economic units that received financing were Colima (21%), Baja California Sur (20.9%), Nayarit (20.6%), Guerrero (18.5%), and Querétaro (18.3%).

Problems faced by economic units

According to data from the Economic Census 2019, the main problems faced by the economic units of Retail Trade with up to 10 workers are public insecurity (36.6%), another problems (12.8%), high expenses in service payments (9.55%), and high taxes (8.77%).

According to data from the Economic Census 2019, the distribution of economic units that had an accounting system  was 52.1% units with up to 10 people, 96.9% units with 11 to 50 people, 99.1% units with 51 to 250 people, and 99.6% units with 251 and more people.

The states with the highest percentage of economic units that had an accounting system were Baja California Sur (73.2%), Quintana Roo (72.4%), Chihuahua (71%), Baja California (67.1%), and Colima (65.7%).

According to data from the 2019 Economic Census, 62.7% of the large economic units in the Retail Trade sector separated their waste, highlighting the separation of paper (94.4%), plastic (82.7%), and metal (43.7%).

On the other hand, 18.5% of the large economic units applied some treatment to the wastewater generated in their activity. The main uses of the treated water were discharge to the public network (13.7%), cooling system (3.56%), and gardening and cleaning (1.09%).

Expenditure and Investment in Environmental Protection

According to data from the Economic Census 2019, 16.2% of the large economic units in the Retail Trade sector made expenditures on environmental protection, highlighting expenditures in non-hazardous waste management ($786M MX), hazardous waste management ($122M MX), and care and maintenance of the vehicle fleet ($22.8M MX).

On the other hand, 15.4% of the large economic units made investment in environmental protection. The main investments were in participation in environmental care campaigns ($814M MX), decrease energy consumption ($803M MX), and decrease water consumption ($740M MX).

According to data from the Economic Census 2019, 5.49% of the large economic units of the private and parastatal sector of Retail Trade had innovation activities in 2018.

Of the total staff employed in large economic units, 4.31% was employed in product innovation activities, 2.58% in process innovation, 6.4% in market innovation, 5.04% in organizational innovation, and 7.08% in innovation for technological adaptation and documentation.

Qualified staff in Innovation Activities

According to data from the Economic Census 2019, the lowercase Retail Trade Sector had 6,974 economic units that had qualified staff in technological research and development activities, 183 economic units had it for research and technological development in the field of Biotechnology and 162 economic units for research and technological development in Nanotechnology.

In the same year, 291 economic units had qualified personnel in the registration or processing of patents for brands, products or processes, and 385 economic units had this type of staff to contracts or acquisition of patents for brands, products or processes.
